Penology

The study of punishment of crime or criminal offenders, including the study of control and prevention of crime through punishment.

Mittimus

A court order issued after a final judgment has become final and executory, commanding the enforcement of the sentence.

The institutional record of an inmate which consists of his mittimus or commitment order, the prosecutor’s information, and the decision of the trial court.

A crime strategy that focuses on keeping offenders in the community rather than placing them in long-term institutions.

Contraband

Any article, item, or thing prohibited by law and/or forbidden by jail rules.

Hulks

Decrepit former transport or warships used to house prisoners; also referred to as "floating hells."

Classical School

A school of penology that maintains the doctrine of psychological hedonism or free will, suggesting the offender chooses the crime and must face the punishment.

Positivist/Italian School

A school of penology that denies individual responsibility and reflects non-punitive reactions to crime, considering social, biological, and environmental factors.

The penalty of banishing a person from the place where he or she committed a crime, prohibiting the person from entering within a 25-kilometer perimeter.
