Temporal Lobe
Important for auditory processing, recognizing, and naming specific objects.
Agnosia
Aware of an object but can't name it; loss of connection between recognition and applying a name.
Prosopagnosia
The inability to identify faces.
Frontal Lobe
Separated from the parietal lobe by the central sulcus. Important in personality, planning, and social awareness.
Primary Motor Cortex
Area on the frontal lobe side of the central sulcus that maps out skeletal muscle groups, controlling motor function.
Parietal Lobe
Contains the primary somatosensory cortex, responsible for the feeling of touch and spatial processing.
Primary Somatosensory Cortex
Strip of cerebrum on the parietal lobe side that exists before the central sulcus. Body map relating to touching sensation.
Contralateral Neglect
Damage to the right parietal lobe leads to inability to process sensory information from the left side of the body.
Occipital Lobe
Receives and processes information primarily associated with the visual system.
PET Scanning
Positron Emission Tomography, involves injecting a radioactive substance to label high energy consumption areas of the brain.
Wernicke's Area
Area of the brain associated with interpreting language.
Broca's Area
Area of the brain associated with producing language.
Aphasia
Condition resulting from damage to language processing centers in the brain.
Wernicke's Aphasia
Inability to understand visual or spoken communication due to damage in Wernicke's area.
Broca's Aphasia
Inability to produce sensible spoken or written language due to damage in Broca's area.
