SBAR
A handout used for clinical reports and data sheets to organize nursing information.
Passive Reading
Reading done for enjoyment that is interesting and enjoyable, but not for textbook comprehension.
Active Reading
A process necessary for comprehending textbook material involving critiquing, organizing, and memorizing through pre-reading, during, and post-reading segments.
HIPPA protocols
Legal standards for maintaining patient privacy that must be followed when using computers and technology in nursing.
Changed Clues
A troubleshooting issue in information retention where a student is unable to recall info during a test if wording is changed.
Interference
A memory issue where recently learned material interferes with the recollection of previously learned material.
Mental Overcrowding
A state of being unable to push more into memory due to extraneous stimulus like TV, people, or phones.
Underlearning or Disuse
Lack of recall when needed, caused by a failure to quiz oneself or review information immediately after class.
Growth Mindset
The belief that every problem has a solution even if it takes tremendous time and effort, and the welcoming of challenges.
Conceptual Learning
Also known as concept-based learning (CBC); a teaching method focusing on broader principles applied to specific examples rather than isolated facts.
Exemplar
Specific examples or sub-titles of a main concept in concept-based learning.
ABC Framework
A prioritization framework in nursing standing for Airway, Breathing, and Circulation.
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
A priority framework that moves from physiological needs (air, water, food) to safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization.
SATA
Select-All-that Apply questions, which should be treated as a series of individual true or false statements.
Physiological Needs
The most basic level of Maslow's hierarchy including air, water, food, shelter, sleep, clothing, and reproduction.
