Simple Squamous Epithelium
A single layer of thin, flat cells.
Simple cuboidal epithelium
A single layer of cube shaped cells with round centrally located nuclei
Simple Columnar Epithelium
Single layer of tall narrow cells with oval nuclei located near the bottom side of cells
Stratified squamous epithelium
Many layers of flat cells with the top layer being squamous and the bottom being columnar or cuboidal
Pseudostratified columnar epithelium
Single layer of column-shaped cells that looks like multiple layers because the nuclei sit at different heights. Every cell touches the basement membrane
Transitional epithelium
Multi-layered tissue where the cells appear rounded and thick when relaxed and become flat and squamous when stretched.
Areolar connective tissue
Loose connective tissue made up of loosely arranged fibers, lots of open space, and several types of cells.
Adipose connective tissue
Loose connective tissue made mostly of fat-storing cells
Reticular connective tissue
Loose connective tissue made of a network of thin, branching fibers, looks web like
Dense regular connective tissue
Strong, tightly packed connective tissue made of parallel bundles of collagen fibers, all the fibers run the same direction.
Dense Irregular Connective tissue
Strong connective tissue made of collagen fibers arranged in many different directions
Elastic Connective tissue
Dense connective tissue packed with elastic fibers that allow it to stretch and recoil
Hyaline Cartilage
Most common cartilage in the body, smooth, glassy, provides support and cushioning.
Elastic Cartilage
Dense with elastic fibers that allow it to bend, stronger and more flexible than hyaline cartilage
Fibrocartilage
Strongest and most durable type of cartilage, dense with thick fibers arranged in bundles made for heavy compression and pulling.
Compact Bone
Strong outer layer of bone that gives bones their strength and structure.
Central Canal
Middle tube-like opening inside each osteon of compact bone.
Osteon
A cylinder-shaped unit in compact bone made of concentric rings around a central canal that contains blood vessels and nerves.
