Force
A push or pull exerted on an object that changes its speed, direction or shape.
magnitude
The amount or strength of a force shown by an arrow.
Newton
A unit of measure that equals the force required to accelerate 1 kilogram of mass at 1 meter per second per second
Balanced Force
Equal forces acting on an object in opposite directions which result in no motion.
Unbalanced Forces
Forces that are not equal and result in motion.
Net Force
The combination of ALL forces acting on an object.
Contact Forces
Forces that result from physical contact between two objects.
Friction
A force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are in contact.
Rolling Friction
Friction that occurs when round objects move across surfaces.
Static Friction
Friction that acts on objects that are not moving.
Fluid Friction
Friction that occurs as an object moves through a liquid or gas.
Sliding Friction
Friction that occurs when one solid surface slides over another.
Tension
A strain force such as pulling ropes, cables, bridges or pulleys.
Gravity
A force of attraction between ALL objects that is due to their masses and distance from each other.
Electrical Force
A non-contact force that one charge exerts on another.
Magnetic Force
A non-contact force that certain metals exert on one another.
