Digital literacy
Having current knowledge and understanding of computers, mobile devices, the web, and related technologies.
Computer
An electronic device operating under the control of instructions stored in its own memory that can accept data (input), process it, produce information (output), and store the information for future use.
Laptop (Notebook Computer)
A thin, lightweight mobile computer with a screen in its lid and a keyboard in its base.
Tablets
Thin, lighter-weight mobile computer that has a touch screen; smaller than a laptop but larger than a phone.
Desktop Computer
Personal computer designed to be in a stationery location, where all of its components fit on or under a desk.
Server
A computer dedicated to providing one or more services to other computers or devices on a network.
Network
A collection of computers and devices connected together, often wirelessly.
Mobile device
A computing device small enough to hold in your hand, often between 3 and 5 inches, and some are Internet capable (can connect to the Internet).
Smartphone
An Internet-capable phone that usually includes a calendar, an address book, calculator, notepad, games, and other apps.
Digital Camera
Device that allows you to take photos and store images digitally.
Digital Media Player
Mobile device which can store, organize, play and view digital media; music, photo, video.
E-book Reader
Mobile device that is used primarily for reading e-books.
Wearable Device
Small, mobile computing consumer device designed to be worn and communicate with a mobile device/computers.
Game Console
Mobile computing device designed for single-player/multiplayer video games.
Input Device
Any hardware component that allows you to enter data and instructions into a computer/mobile device.
Keyboard
Contains keys that you press to enter data/instructions into a computer/mobile devices.
Pointing Device
Input device allows user to control small symbol on screen (pointer).
Mouse
Pointing device that fits under the palm of your hand comfortably.
Touchpad
Small, flat, rectangular pointing device that is sensitive to pressure and motion.
Microphone
Input device that enables you to speak into a computer/mobile device.
Webcam
Digital video camera that allows capture video & audio.
Scanner
Light-sensing input device that converts printed text/images into a form that computer can process.
Output Device
Any hardware that convey information from computer/mobile device to one/more people.
Printer
Produce text and graphics on a physical medium, such as paper.
Display
Visually conveys text, graphics and video information.
Speakers
Allow to hear audio (music, voice, etc).
Memory
Electronic components that store instructions waiting to be executed and the data needed by those instructions.
Storage
Holds data, instructions, information for future use.
Storage Device
Records (writes) and/or retrieve (reads) items to/from storage media.
Hard Disks
Storage device that contains one/more inflexible, circular platters that use magnetic particles to store data, instructions, information.
Solid-State Drives (SSD)
Storage device that use flash memory to store data, instructions and information.
USB Flash Drives
Portable flash memory storage device that you plug in a USB port (special, accessible opening on a computer/device).
Memory Cards
Removable flash memory (not bigger than 1.5 inches), that you can insert/remove from a slot in a computer/devices/card reader.
Optical Discs
Type of storage media that consists of a flat, round, portable metal disc made of metal, plastic and lacquer that is written and read by laser. Types: CDs (Compact Discs) and DVDs (Digital Versatile Discs)
Cloud Storage
Internet service that provides remote storage to computer user.
World Wide Web (Web)
Global library of information available to anyone connected to the Internet.
Internet
Worldwide collection of computer networks that connects millions of business, government agencies, institutions, individuals.
Webpage
Each electronic collection that contain text, graphics, audio, video.
Website
Collection of related webpages, which are sorted on a web server.
Web Server
Computer that delivers requested webpages to your computer/devices.
Link (Hyperlink)
Built-in connection to other documents, graphics, audio files, videos, webpages or websites.
Browser
Software that enable users with an Internet connection to access/view webpages.
Search Engine
Software that fins websites, webpages, images, videos, news, maps, and other related to the topic.
Online Social Network
Website that encourage members in its online community to share their interests, stories, photos, etc with other user.
Allows you to send/receive messages/files via computer network.
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
Enable user to speak to other user over the Internet.
FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
User can transfer items to/from other computers on the Internet.
Malware (Malicious Software)
Software that acts without user’s knowledge & deliberately alters the comps/device operation.
Username
Unique combination of characters (alphabet/number).
Password
Private comb of characters associated with user name.
Green Computing
Reduce electricity consume and environmental waste generated when using a computer.
Software
Series of related instructions, organized for a common purpose, that tells the computer what task to perform and how to perform them.
Operating Systems
Set of programs that coordinate all activities among computer and device hardware.
Applications (Apps)
Programs that designed to make users more productive and assist them with personal tasks
Install
Process of setting up the program to work with a computer/devices/printers/other hardware.
Software developer
Someone who develops programs/apps/writes instruction that direct the comp/ device to process data into information.
Communication Device
Hardware capable of transferring items from comps to transmission media and vice versa.
Hot Spot
Wireless network that provides Internet connection.
Wired Communications
Often use some form of telephone wiring, cable to send communications signal.
Wireless Communications
Send signal through air or space.
Networks
Collection of computers and devices connected together often wirelessly via communication device/transmission media.
Course Management System
Software that contains tools for class preparation, distribution and management.
Distance Learning Classes
Delivery of education and learning occurs at different location.
Blog
Informal website consisting of time-stamped articles (post) in a diary or journal format, listed in reverse chronological order.
Podcast
Popular way to distribute audio/video on the web. It is a recorded media that users can download/stream to a computer.
Wiki
Collaborative website that allows users to create, add, modify or delete content via browser.
Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM)
The use of computer to assist with manufacturing process (like fabrication and assembly).
Longitudinal recording
Aligns magnetic particle horizontally around the disk surface.
Perpendicular recording
Aligns magnetic particle vertically, making much greater storage capacities possible.
Density
Number of bits in an area on a storage medium. (higher density, higher storage)
Formatting
Process of dividing the disk into tracks and sectors. (so that the OS can store and locate data and info on the disk)
Track
A narrow recording band that forms a full circle on the surface of the disk.
Sectors
The disk’s storage location, wedge-shaped sections that break the tracks into small arcs.
Read/write head
Mechanism that reads/writes items in the drive as it touch the disk recording surface.
Applications (Apps)
Consists of programs that designed to make users more productive and assist them with personal task.
Native App
App written for specific platform and installed on comp/ device.
Cloud App
Software/data that are not stored on comp/device.
Web App
Special type of cloud app that accessed by visiting a website in a browser.
Mobile web app
Web app that runs on mobile device. App is optimized for display in browser on a mobile device regardless screen size and orientation.
Retail Software
Mass-produced, copyrighted software for wide variety of users.
Custom Software
Performs specific function to business/industry.
Shareware
Copyrighted software that distributed at no cost for a trial period.
Freeware
Copyrighted software that distributed at no cost by individual/company that have all rights to the software.
Open Source Software
Software provided for use, modification and redistribution.
Public-domain software
Donated for public use and has no copyright restrictions. Anyone can copy and distribute at no cost.
Desktop Publishing
Apps that enable designers to create sophisticated publications that contain text, graphics, colours.
Tag
Short descriptive label that you assign to webpages, photos, videos, posts, etc. so that it is easier to locate at a later time.
Ethernet
NS that specify no central comp on the device (node) on the network should control when the data can be transmitted.
Firewalls
Hardware/software that protects network’s resource from intrusion by another user network.
Encryption
Process of converting data that is readable by humans into encoded characters to prevent unauthorized access.
Digital Signature
Encrypted code that a person/website attaches to an electronic message to verify the identity of the message sender.
Cookies
Small text file that a web server stores on your computer. Contains data about your username, viewing preference, etc.
Phishing
Scam; perpetrators sends an official looking message that attempts to obtain personal or financial information.
Fintech
New financial industry that applies technology to improve financial activities
Cloud Computing
Cloud Computing is a set of service-oriented architectures, which allow users to access a number of resources in a way that is elastic,cost-efficient and on-demand.
Software as a Service (SaaS)
Apps, management and user interface provided over a network.
Platform as a Service (PaaS)
Apps development, OS and deployment frameworks.
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
Virtual computing, storage and network resource that can be provisioned on demand.
Bandwidth
Measure of the capability of a network to send and receive data.
