retinal ganglion cells (RGC) processing
light coming from the body is going to pass all the way through the cell body and it gets transduced
physical light goes through these— they don’t have anything to do with processing or understanding the light
how much light do we lose that comes into our eyes
about 1/3
what forms the first part of the optic nerve that leaves the eye (they’re the last cells inside the eye)
RGCs
what are the two main types of RGCs and which go w rods and which go w cones?
p (parvocellular) cells go w cones
M (magnocellular) cells go w rods
thicker axons
things move faster and are transmitted faster through these than thinner axons
is neural convergence a good thing?
not for acuity when it comes with the rods (we lose the fine details in our peripheral)
good for cones
how many units of activation do we need to get the response needed to fire the RCG?
we need 10 units of activation to get the response needed to fire the rcg
we get a response w rods but not w cones, since rods detect the light but cones do not
