Language Varieties
Different forms of a language used across contexts, regions, and social groups, including dialects, sociolects, idiolects, and related features.
Geographical Dimension
Language variation caused by where people live or speak, such as regional dialects within a country.
Social Dimension
Language variation based on social factors like class, group membership, or social networks.
Contextual Dimension
Language variation that depends on the situation, audience, occasion, or topic of conversation.
Dialect (Diyalekto/Dayalek)
A regional or social variety of a language with unique features of pronunciation, vocabulary, or grammar.
Wikain
A term used by some to refer to dialect vocabulary or dialectal language varieties.
Sociolect
Language variation based on social group membership, such as class, profession, or subculture.
Ecolect (Ekol)
The home or household language variety a speaker uses within family and domestic settings.
Pidgin
A simplified language that develops for communication between people with different native languages; lacks native speakers and formalized grammar.
Creole
A stable natural language that arose from a pidgin and became the native language of a community.
Jargon
Specialized vocabulary and expressions used by a particular group or profession.
Register
The variation in language depending on formality, context, and disciplinary setting (formal vs informal).
Abodago
Legal documents such as contracts; term from occupational language.
Nars
Medical language or terminology used by nurses and in healthcare contexts.
Guro
Teacher; language associated with teaching, including planning and instructional discourse.
Manunulat
Writer; terms and language related to literary works or writings.
Idiolect
An individual’s unique way of speaking, including their personal vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar.
Conyo
A sociolect blending Filipino languages with English and sometimes Spanish, used in casual social settings.
Jejemon
A contemporary sociolect/style used in texting/online communication with nonstandard spellings and abbreviations.
Linggwistikong Komunidad (Speech Community)
A group of speakers who share norms and patterns of language use and understandings.
Homogeneous Language Situation
A language environment where everyone speaks the same language with little or no dialect variation.
Heterogeneous Language Situation
A language environment with multiple languages or dialects due to social factors and diversity.
