Performance Psychology
The study and application of psychological principles of human performance to help people consistently perform in the upper range of their capabilities and more thoroughly enjoy the performance process.
Pressure
Any factor or combination of factors that increases the importance of performing well on a particular occasion.
Cognitive Restructuring
Aims to correct irrational or ineffective patterns of thought, based on the belief that behavioural and emotional change can only be accessed by intervening with the cognitive process.
Acceptance & Commitment Approaches
Removes the focus of controlling internal experiences to accepting difficult experiences as an inherent component of the sporting experience and engaging in actions which aligns with the individuals' values
Mindfulness
Paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.
Values
Personal statements we consider important in our lives that define a direction and a certain way for how you want to be, and how to act.
Psychological Skills Training
Involves the use of specific strategies to help control the experience of anxiety or pressure.
Self-Efficacy
Belief in one's ability to succeed in specific situations or accomplish a task.
Process Goals
Center on the execution of behaviors, skills and strategies (e.g., technique, form, thought processes to regulate behavior) that are integral to effective task execution.
Performance Goals
Are self-referenced, and refer to a specific end product of performance; they normally involve a numeric value and can be achieved by the performer relatively independently of others.
Outcome Goals
Based on the outcome of a specified event and involve interpersonal comparison of some kind (e.g., a finishing place in a race or winning and losing).
Strategic Self-Talk
Cues or statements that are used based on a pre-determined plan serving specific performance purposes.
Instructional self-talk
Aims at enhancing performance through the activation of appropriate responses.
Pressure Training
The manipulation of the practice environment with the intent to create a stress-related response within the performer.
