Seismic waves
The energy released due to the pressure along the plate boundaries which spread out from the focus.
Primary waves (p-waves)
Vibrations caused by compression that make crystal rock move back and forth in the direction of waves movement; they can travel through both solid rocks and the Earth's liquid core.
Secondary waves (s-waves)
Waves that travel through the surface rocks at right angles to the direction of travel and are slower than primary waves.
Love waves (L-waves)
Surface waves travelling through the surface rocks that cause surface rocks to move from side to side in the horizontal plate at right angle to the direction of wave movement.
