Is space exploration worthwhile?
Whether space exploration is worthwhile depends on how we define value. If value is measured only in immediate financial returns, it may appear unjustifiable. However, if we consider long-term scientific progress, technological innovation, planetary security and humanity's future, the case becomes considerably stronger.
If millions of people are still living in poverty, why should governments spend billions on space exploration?
That's a valid concern and one of the strongest criticisms of space exploration. However, I don't think it has to be an either-or choice. Space budgets are often a relatively small proportion of national budgets, and many technologies developed through space programmes—such as satellite communications, weather forecasting and disaster monitoring—directly improve life on Earth. The real issue is whether governments are allocating resources efficiently overall, rather than whether space exploration should stop entirely.
Couldn't robots do everything instead of sending humans into space?
In many situations, robotic missions are safer and significantly cheaper. Robots can survive extreme environments without risking human lives. However, humans remain better at adapting to unexpected situations, making complex decisions and conducting detailed scientific investigations. Therefore, I believe robotic missions should lead exploration where possible, while human missions should be reserved for objectives where people provide clear additional value.
s colonising Mars realistic?
At present, a permanent settlement on Mars faces enormous challenges, including radiation exposure, limited resources and the psychological effects of long-term isolation. While advances in technology may make it possible in the future, I don't think it should be viewed as a replacement for protecting Earth. Colonising another planet should complement—not replace—our responsibility to solve problems here.
Should developing countries invest in space programmes?
It depends on their priorities and resources. Countries facing severe challenges in healthcare, education or infrastructure may achieve greater immediate benefits by investing in those sectors first. However, investing in satellite technology for weather forecasting, agriculture or disaster management can provide significant economic and social benefits even for developing nations. So the type of space investment matters
Is space tourism ethical?
Space tourism raises important ethical concerns because it consumes enormous resources while only a very small number of wealthy individuals can afford it. On the other hand, supporters argue that private investment can accelerate technological innovation without relying solely on public funding. Personally, I believe commercial space activities should be regulated to ensure they contribute to scientific research and broader public benefit rather than becoming purely luxury experiences.
Why should we explore space when climate change is already threatening Earth?
I would argue that space exploration actually helps us combat climate change. Satellites monitor sea-level rise, greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation and extreme weather events. Without satellite data, our understanding of climate change would be far less accurate. Therefore, investment in space can also be viewed as an investment in protecting our planet
Who owns resources mined from asteroids?
This remains a legal and ethical issue. International agreements, such as the Outer Space Treaty, state that outer space is not subject to national sovereignty, but questions about commercial resource extraction are still evolving. Future international cooperation will be essential to prevent conflicts and ensure that benefits are shared fairly.
Isn't space exploration mainly benefiting rich countries?
Currently, wealthier nations do benefit more because they possess the technology and funding required for major missions. However, satellite services, climate monitoring and international scientific collaborations also provide benefits to developing countries. The challenge is ensuring more equitable access to these technologies
Why not spend all that money on healthcare?
Healthcare is undoubtedly a priority, but government budgets support many sectors simultaneously. Investment in scientific research often produces long-term innovations that also improve healthcare. For example, technologies developed for space missions have contributed to medical imaging, remote healthcare and advanced materials
What if there is no life elsewhere in the universe?
The value of space exploration does not depend solely on discovering extraterrestrial life. Scientific research improves our understanding of physics, astronomy and our own planet. Even without finding alien life, the technologies and knowledge gained have significant benefits.
What is the greatest benefit of space exploration?
I think the greatest benefit is technological innovation. Scientific discoveries are important, but technologies developed for space missions have practical applications that improve daily life, from communication and navigation to environmental monitoring and healthcare.
What is the biggest disadvantage
In my opinion, the greatest disadvantage is opportunity cost. Every major investment involves trade-offs, and governments must justify spending billions on space when urgent issues such as poverty, education and healthcare also require funding. That is why careful prioritisation is essential
Has space exploration ever directly saved lives?
Yes. Satellites support early warning systems for hurricanes, cyclones and floods, enabling governments to evacuate communities before disasters strike. They also assist search-and-rescue operations, monitor wildfires and support emergency communications, all of which have saved lives.
Would your argument apply equally to Mauritius?
Not entirely. Mauritius is unlikely to prioritise expensive human spaceflight, but it already benefits from space technologies through weather forecasting, cyclone tracking, GPS, telecommunications and satellite imaging. For a small island nation, investing in the use of space technology rather than launching its own missions is probably the more practical approach.
