The Electronic theory of Covalent Bonding that leads to the Lewis dot Structure.
MOT
Molecular orbital theory.
VBT
Valance bond theory.
VSEPR
Valance Sholl election Pair Pulsion.
Central atom rules
Criteria include having the least number of atoms, less Electronegativity (E-N), large size, or a higher Atomic number (At no).
H and F
Elements that can never be the central atom in a Lewis dot structure.
2nd period Central Atom
The octate of the central atom must be completed (specifically for C, N, O, and F).
3rd period and below Central Atom
The central atom can have 8 or more than 8 electrons.
Positive charge location
If a positive charge is present in a species, it will be located on the Central atom.
Negative charge location
If a negative charge is present in a species, such as in SO42− or CO32−, it will be located on the Corner Atom.
Central Atom Example Species
Examples provided include CH4, NH8, H2O, HPB, CO2, SO2, and SOCl2.
