Dim Headlights

When driving at night, dim your lights within 150 m of an oncoming vehicle or within 60 m of a vehicle you are following.

Maximum Speed Limits

50km/h in cities/towns/villages; 80km/h anywhere else.

Safe Following Distance

Two seconds behind the vehicle in front of you.

Passing a Cyclist

Maintain a minimum distance of one metre when passing a cyclist.

Slow Moving Sign

Indicates a vehicle moving at 40 km/h or slower.

Approaching a Stopped School Bus

Stop at least 20 m away from the bus.

Uncontrolled Intersections

Yield right of way.

Distance from Train Tracks

Stop 5 m from passing train.

Passing near Pedestrian Crossovers

You must not pass any vehicle within 30 m of a pedestrian crossover.

Roundabouts

Travel counter-clockwise.

Passing Snow Plows

Never pass slow moving snow plows under any condition.

Stopping for Streetcars

Stay at least 2m behind the rear doors.

Parking - Clear View

Do not park anywhere you do not have a clear view of 125 m in both directions

Parking - Fire Hydrant

Do not park within 3 m of fire hydrant.

Parking - Bridge

100 m on or within a bridge.

Parking - Public Entrance

6m of a public entrance.

Parking - Intersection

9 m of an intersection NOT controlled by traffic lights.

Parking - Traffic Lights & Rail Crossing

15 m of traffic lights & rail crossing.

Emergency Vehicles

Illegal to follow within 150 m of a fire vehicle responding to an alarm.

Driving in Heavy Fog

Use low-beam headlights.

G1 Driver Supervision

A g1 driver may practice driving under the supervision of a licensed driver w/ 4 years of experience driving

G1 Driver Supervisor BAC

G1 driver supervisors BAC must be lower than 0.05%

Changing Name or Address

Notify the Ministry of Transportation within six days of change.

Demerit Points Record

Stay on record for two years from after the day of offence.

Demerit Points Punishment (New Drivers)

• 2 - 6 Points: Warning Letter; 9+ Points: license suspension for 60 days (2 years failure to do so) after reduced to 4 and if 9 again lose for 6 mo

Demerit Points Punishment (Fully Licensed)

• 6-9 Points: Warning Letter; 15 Points: license suspended for 30 days (2 years failure) after reduced to 7 again

Seven Demerit Points Offenses

• Failing to remain at scene of collision; Failing to stop for police

Six Demerit Points Offenses

• Careless driving; Racing; Exceeding limit by 40km/h or more in area less than 80km/h; Exceeding limit by 50km/h; Failing to stop for school bus

Five Demerit Points Offenses

Bus driver failing to stop at unprotected railway crossing

Four Demerit Points Offenses

• Exceeding speed limit by 30-49km/h; Following too closely (tailgating); Failing to stop at pedestrian crossover.

Three Demerit Points Offenses

Exceeding speed limit by 16-29 km/h

Driving while holding or using a hand-held wireless communications/entertainment device or viewing a display screen unrelated to the driving task;

Failing to yield the right-of-way;

Obey traffic lights + traffic control officer + school signs; Driving wrong way;

Crowding drivers seat;

Not moving for emergency vehicle

Two Demerit Points Offenses

• HOV lanes; Improper opening of vehicle door; Seatbelts; Prohibited turns/improper turns; Towing people; Signs; No signal; Slow driving; Reversing highway; Not sharing road; Failing to lower headlight beam

Mandatory Suspension Reasons

• Failure to stop for a police officer; Not paying a traffic fine.

Immediate 90-Day Suspension

• BAC more than (.08); Fail or refuse tests when asked by police

First Time Criminal Code Offense

1 year suspension
