Unrestricted Line (URL) Officers

Officers who serve in all primary Navy warfare communities and are eligible for command opportunities at sea and ashore.

Restricted Line (RL) Officers

Officers who provide highly specialized technical services supporting Navy missions; generally not eligible for command at sea, but may command auxiliary vessels and shore activities.

Staff Corps (SC) Officers

Officers who provide specialized services necessary to naval installations, units, service members, and families.

IW-L Warfighting Pillars

Assured Command and Control (C2), Battlespace Awareness, and Integrated Fires.

Assured Command and Control (C2)

An IW-L warfighting pillar that assures secure and rapid sharing of information across all commands and most platforms.

Battlespace Awareness

An IW-L warfighting pillar that maintains awareness of the physical environment and threats posed by potential adversaries.

Integrated Fires

An IW-L warfighting pillar that uses cyberspace operations, electronic warfare, and information operations to deny, disrupt, defeat, or manipulate adversary capabilities.

IPOE

Intelligence Preparation of the Operational Environment; systematic and continuous analysis of the adversary, terrain, weather, and battlespace.

Indications and Warning (I&W)

An intelligence function providing early warning of potential hostile action by monitoring adversary order of battle and normal operating patterns.

Targeting

An intelligence function that identifies adversary critical vulnerabilities for possible attack/disruption and determines weapons that can achieve desired effects.

Strategic Intelligence

Intelligence supporting senior military/civilian leaders that develops national strategy/policy, monitors global situations, assists military plans and force-structure decisions, and supports strategic operations.

Operational Intelligence

Intelligence supporting combatant/joint-force commanders focusing on enemy capabilities/intentions, operational environment, centers of gravity, vulnerabilities, events, and campaign planning.

Tactical Intelligence

Intelligence supporting commanders in battles/engagements by providing imminent-threat, operational-environment-change, and obstacle intelligence.

GEOINT

Geospatial Intelligence, which uses imagery, IMINT (imagery intelligence), and geospatial information.

HUMINT

Human Intelligence, obtained from debriefings, interrogation operations, and source operations.

SIGINT

Signals Intelligence, which collects and analyzes electromagnetic signals from adversary communications, radar, and weapon systems.

COMINT

Communications Intelligence; a SIGINT subcategory.

ELINT

Electronic Intelligence; a SIGINT subcategory.

FISINT

Foreign Instrumentation Signals Intelligence.

MASINT

Measurement and Signature Intelligence, derived from electromagnetic, radar, radio-frequency, geophysical, materials, and nuclear-radiation data.

OSINT

Open-Source Intelligence, derived from academia, interagency sources, newspapers/periodicals, due diligence, media broadcasts, Internet, and alternative collections.

TECHINT

Technical Intelligence, applied in weapon-system intelligence and scientific intelligence.

Counterintelligence (CI)

An intelligence discipline designed to counter adversary intelligence operations and threats.

Cryptologic Warfare (CW)

An IW specialty focused on SIGINT, Electronic Warfare, Information Operations, and Integrated Fires while maintaining cyberspace knowledge.

Electronic Warfare (EW)

Uses electromagnetic/directed energy to control the electromagnetic spectrum or attack an enemy; includes EA, EP, and ES.

Information Operations (IO)

Uses information-related capabilities to influence, disrupt, corrupt, or usurp adversary decision-making.

CTI

Cryptologic Technician Interpretive; translates/interprets/transcribes foreign-language material from Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Persian-Farsi, Russian, and Spanish.

CTM

Cryptologic Technician Maintenance; installs/configures/maintains/repairs electronic, computer, and network systems used in cryptologic operations.

CTR

Cryptologic Technician Collection; collects, analyzes, and reports communications signals of interest.

CTT

Cryptologic Technician Technical; collects/processes/analyzes radar signals and operates/maintains electronic detection, deception, and countermeasure systems.

METOC

Meteorology/Oceanography; provides environmental observations, analyses, prognostic data/products, and meteorological/oceanographic effects for warfighting.

Aerographer's Mate (AG)

Enlisted METOC rating that collects/measures/analyzes environmental data and prepares weather forecasts and briefs.

Cyber Warfare Engineer (CWE)

Officer community trained in disruptive technologies, cyberspace capability development, and cyberspace operations across CNA, CNE, and CND.

Communications Systems Warfare Officer (CSWO)

Operates, maintains, secures, plans, acquires, and integrates Navy network domains afloat and ashore.

NIPRNET

Non-Classified Internet Protocol Routing Network; carries unclassified information only.

SIPRNET

Secret Internet Protocol Routing Network; carries information up to and including Secret.

JWICS

Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System; carries information up to Top Secret and Sensitive Compartmented Information.

Maritime Space Officer (MSO)

Navy space professionals/subject-matter experts created in August 2021 who integrate joint space capabilities into maritime plans and operations.

Radio Frequency (RF)

Electromagnetic frequencies ranging from $3\,\text{kHz}$ to $300\,\text{GHz}$.

Communications Jamming

Deliberate radiation, re-radiation, or reflection of electromagnetic signals to impair or deny enemy communications.

Imitative Communications Deception

Fraudulent transmissions inserted into enemy communications systems in imitation of authentic transmissions to confuse/deceive.

JIPOE

Joint Intelligence Preparation of the Operating Environment; a continuous analytical process producing intelligence assessments for the Joint Force Commander.

Engineering Duty Officer (EDO)

Restricted Line officer providing leadership in acquisition, design, construction, life-cycle maintenance, and modernization of Navy warfighting platforms.

Salvage Diving Officer

An EDO additionally qualified to direct/support fleet salvage operations such as harbor clearance, battle-damage repair, deep-ocean search/recovery, and underwater repairs.

Aerospace Engineering Duty Officer (AEDO)

Provides management and technical direction across naval aircraft, spacecraft, and weapons acquisition from design through production; tests/evaluates systems.

Aerospace Maintenance Duty Officer (AMDO)

Works in fleet maintenance and material acquisition/support; serves as NAVAIR Program Manager and Naval Aviation Depot leadership.

Public Affairs Officer (PAO)

Principal Navy capability for informing the public, strengthening trust/credibility, and communicating command intent across the information environment.

Maximum disclosure, minimum delay, while protecting operational security and classified information.

Human Resources (120X)

Community that delivers HR expertise to define, recruit, develop, assign, and retain a highly skilled Navy Total Force workforce.

Foreign Area Officer (FAO)

Navy international-engagement professional combining operational experience, cultural knowledge, and language expertise to support national/maritime strategies.

Supply Corps Mission

Conducts/enables supply chain, acquisition, logistics, and Sailor/family-care activities to sustain naval forces worldwide.

Operational Supply Departments

S1 Stock Control, S2 Food Service, S3 Retail Services, and S4 Disbursing.

Civil Engineer Corps (CEC)

Rating

Rate

An enlisted title combining rating abbreviation and paygrade, such as BM2.

Striker

A PACT Sailor seeking advancement into a specific rating after gaining experience/training toward that rating.

Command Master Chief (CMC)

Senior-most enlisted service member in a command and special assistant to the CO on enlisted matters, welfare, morale, utilization, advancement, and training.

Class A School

Provides basic technical knowledge for job performance and further specialized training.

Class C School

Provides advanced skills and techniques for a particular job.

Class E School

Provides professional education leading to an academic degree.

Class F School

Provides fleet refresher/operator/maintenance/technical training lasting less than 13 calendar days.

Class R School

Initial enlistment/recruit training (boot camp) held at Recruit Training Center Great Lakes, Illinois.

Final Multiple Score (FMS)

Combines advancement factors and rating knowledge/evaluations to rank qualified candidates for advancement, administered by Navy Advancement Center N3.

Ready Reserve

Primary source of Reserve personnel for mobilization; includes SELRES, TAR, and IRR.

Standby Reserve

Reserve component containing lower-readiness personnel with temporary hardship/disability or key defense-related civilian employment.

Retired Reserve

Reservists in retirement status; generally lower readiness and subject to recall under applicable conditions.

Selected Reserve (SELRES)

Ready Reserve group holding valid mobilization billets and participating in paid monthly drills.

Training and Administration of the Reserve (TAR)

Reservists on active duty tasked with training and administering the Reserve Force.

Individual Ready Reserve (IRR)

Ready Reserve sub-component consisting of the Voluntary Training Unit (VTU) and Active Status Pool (ASP).

Total Force Concept

Concept established in the early 1970s to integrate Reserve forces with active forces to ensure trained/equipped Reserve forces could rapidly support emergencies.

Horizontal Integration

A 1980s strategy assigning reservists to train with the active commands they would serve with during a national emergency.
