Introduction to Maps and Map Reading

A set of vocabulary flashcards defining different map types, symbols, and map reading tools based on the lecture.

Map

A representation of some part of the Earth's surface or a tool that shows details about an area.

Physical maps

Maps that show natural features like mountains, rivers, lakes, oceans, and other parts of the natural landscape.

Political maps

Maps that show borders of areas like countries, states, and cities, which can shift as wars are fought and government changes happen.

Historical maps

Maps that show movements of people, changing borders, battles, and other historical events.

Symbols

Little pictures used on a map to represent anything you want, such as natural resources, capital cities, or landforms.

Legend (or Key)

A chart or guide that tells you what the symbols, lines, and colors on a map mean.

Labels

Words on a map that can explain something about the map.

Compass rose

A tool that shows north, south, east, and west on a map to help find directions to and from places.

Map scale

A tool, often found in the map key, that shows the ratio between the distance on the map and the distance in real life.

Globe

A map on a round model that shows places all over Earth.

Precipitation maps

Maps that show how much rainfall or snowfall an area gets.

Transportation maps

Maps that show subway or bus routes.

Landform maps

Maps that can show physical land features like mountains, deserts, or plains.

Natural resource maps

Maps that show resources like coal, oil, or minerals.

Population maps

Maps that show how many people live in a place.
