Mixture
Two or more substances that are physically combined. Examples include Chex Mix.
Pure substance
Classification of matter made up of all the same type of atom, all the same molecules, or all the same ionically bonded elements. Examples include salt, pure water, diamonds, and gold.
Homogeneous mixture
A combination of 2 or more substances that have a completely uniform composition and appearance throughout. Examples include brass, coffee, and air.
Heterogeneous mixture
A combination of 2 or more substances where the composition is not uniform throughout. Examples include salad, ice cubes in a drink, and fog.
Element
Matter made up of a single type of atom and often has a specific number of protons. Examples include Li, O2โ, and O3โ.
Compound
Matter made up of 2 or more different elements that are chemically combined. Examples include H2โO and CO2โ.
