Marbury v. Madison

Established concept of judicial review, first time the Supreme Court declared acts of Congress "unconstitutional' , (1803) Marbury was a midnight appointee of the J. Adams administration who sued J. Madison. Chief Justice Marshall said the law (the Judiciary Act ) that gave the Supreme Court the power to rule such a case was unconstitutional. This case gave the Supreme Court the Power of Judicial Review.

Gibbson v. Ogden

The constitution gives congress the power to regulate interstate commerce

McCulloch v. Maryland

A U.S. Supreme Court case that declared the Second National Bank of the United States was constitutional and that Maryland couldn't interfere with it by taxing it.

Worcester v. Georgia

In this Supreme Court case, John Marshall decided Cherokee Native Americans were entitled to federal protection from the actions of state governments ( Georgia ).The national government not individual states, had authority in Indian affairs. Andrew Jackson did not enforce Marshall's decision, and the Cherokee were forcefully relocated to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) in what became known as the Trail of Tears.

Dred Scott v. Sandford

Supreme Court case, the decision of which stated: (1) blacks were not U.S. citizens and had no rights; therefore, there was no case since Scott couldn't sue in court. (2) blacks were property (3) the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional because it deprived a person of his right to property.
