Why do metallic substances have a high melting point
Due to the strong nondirectional electrostatic attraction (metallic bonding) it takes a lot of heat energy to overwhelm the bonds holding the atoms in place.
Is Metallic substances malleable?
Yes! due to the strong nondirectional electrostatic attraction (metallic bonding) when pressure is applied to the 3D lattice the delocalised electrons move to another cation and maintain bonding. This allows the metal to be reshaped and not shattered.
Can they conduct electricity?
Free moving electrons or charges are necessary for a substance to conduct electricity. Due to the delocalised electrons being able to freely flow these substances are able to conduct electricity.
Describe the hardness of metallic solids...
Metallic solids are very hard because they have strong metallic bonds between their ions.
Are metallic solids brittle? Why?
No they are not because the bonds between their delocalised electrons are non-directional.
What is metallic bonding?
Metallic bonding is when positive metal ions are held together by delocalised electrons.
Do metals dissolve?
Metals do not dissolve because the solvent-solute attraction isn't strong enough, due to the strong metallic bonding within the solute.
Are metallic solids malleable or ductile?
Metals are both malleable and ductile because since their bonds are constantly moving, they can't be broken so the metal won't shatter when a force is applied.
