In 1955, USA supported establishment of Diem’s South Vietnam (corrupt and anti-communist)
Diem’s regime received $1.6 billion in financial support in 1950s
1957 - Viet Cong began waging guerrilla war against South Vietnamese regime, supported by North Vietnam
USA sent military advisors to support and train South Vietnam army
How was US involvement under Kennedy?
Increased no. of military advisors from 11500 (1962) to 23000 (1964)
Began Stratefic hamlets program, fortifying villages against attack
Scheme affected by corruption and unpopularity
How was US involvement under Johnson
1964 - North Vietnamese patrol boats fired upon USA warships in Gulf of Tonkin
Johnson used the incident as an excuse to launch a full-scale war
In 1965, the US launched “Operation Rolling Thunder”, a massive bombing offensive against North Vietnam
The first combat troops (not advisers) also landed in Vietnam in 1965
What are some examples of the Viet Congs guerrilla tactics?
No uniforms, no clear supply bases or headquarters, Booby traps and mines, supporting local population, attacking at close range.
Why did the Viet Cong use these tactics?
The VC and their allies the ARVN were outnumbered and outdated
The tactics were proved to be successful
They maximised their advantages - e.g. morale, willingniss to take causualties, knowledge of language, cuture and terrain
