OCD can be explained through operant conditioning by looking at the ways that compulsions are learned and reinforced.

Someone with OCD has obsessive thoughts that causes anxiety. In order to relieve anxiety, people with OCD perform a compulsion. For example, washing hands. Since the compulsion makes anxiety go away, the brain learns that this behavior works and is effective. Reinforces the negative reinforcement. The cycle continues.
