Elements of Art
The building blocks of visual arts.
Line
A path that is one-dimensional or a mark that connects two points.
Shape
Flat enclosed areas that are two-dimensional and defined by boundaries.
Color
A visual element with three properties: hue (color name), intensity (strength), and value (light or dark).
Hue
The name of a color.
Intensity
The strength of a color.
Value
The lightness or darkness of a color or surface quality.
Texture
The surface quality of an artwork.
Space
The spatial quality or the area around and between design elements.
Form
Three-dimensional (3D) elements that can be viewed from many angles, such as front and back.
Alignment
Keeping elements straight and in order.
Visual Hierarchy
Arranging elements to show their importance.
Contrast
Using differences in colour, size, and shape to highlight elements.
Repetition
Repeating certain design elements or style.
Balance
Distributing visual weight evenly or asymmetrically.
Spacing
The space around and between design elements.
Emphasis
Making important elements stand out.
Proportion
The sizing and scaling of elements in relation to each other.
Rhythm
The repeated pattern of elements in a design.
Pattern
The regular repetition of lines, shapes, or colours.
Movement
The illusion of an action or direction in a design.
Unity
Ensuring all elements work together as a cohesive whole.
Variety
Mixing design elements to create interest.
Importance of Design
Improves visual communication, enhances creativity and unity, helps organize ideas, and makes artwork more meaningful.
