somatic symptom disorder
physical symptoms that suggest physical illness/ injury but can’t be explained by medical condition, direct effect of substance, or attributable to another mental disorder
history of many physical complaints before age 30 usually lasting several years
not intentionally produced or faked
illness anxiety disorder
preoccupation with fears of having or the idea that one has a serious illness based on person’s misinterpretation of symptoms, obsessive preoccupation persists despite medical evaluation and reassurance, used to be called hypochondriasis
conversion disorder
1 or more symptoms or deficits affecting voluntary motor or sensory function that’s caused by a conflict or stressor, not intentionally produced, now called functional neurological symptom disorder
malingering
pretending to be sick, usually done to avoid responsibility or for some type of financial/ legal gain
factitious disorder
purposely inflicting injury/ illness or aggravating an existing condition, fulfills an emotional need
treatment
acknowledge symptoms, don’t tell them it’s all in their head
encourage expression of feelings, especially anxiety
treat co-morbid diagnoses
help pt. identify connection between pain and anxiety
teach anxiety reducing techniques
