Types of Rhyme

what is rhyme?

Repetition of the same sound, different words

Rhyme sheme’t

• the pattern of end rhymes used in a poem

• indicated by letters (ABBA, BCBC, DEDE)

End rhyme

• Rhyme occurs at the end of lines

• Ex./ A speck that would have been beneath my SIGHT on any but a paper sheet so WHITE

Internal rhyme

• The rhyming of 2 or more words within a single line of poetry

• Ex./ deep cut, rough and angles seeped into his grin

A full rhyme, perfect rhyme, or true rhythm, later part of the word or phrase is identical sounding to another

Exact rhyme

Either vowels or constanants of stressed syllables are identical; eyes, light years, yours. Also called a half rhyme, slant rhyme, near rhyme

Imperfect rhyme

2 successive line of poetry that rhyme, commonly have the same meter (open cant stand alone; closed- can stand on its own
