Prepositions

Reliable signals that a noun phrase is coming

Prepositional Phrase

Preposition + noun phrase (noun and its modifiers)

Adverbial modifier

When a prepositional phrase acts like an adverb; answers place, time, manner, etc.

Adjectival modifier

When a prepositional phrase acts like an adjective; adds adjective type description

Phrasal Verb

Verb created by combing a verb and a verb particle

Verb particles

Preposition that forms a unit with a verb; needed for meaning

2 Types of Conjunctions

Coordinating & subordinating conjunctions; conjunctive adverbs

Conjunctions

Structure Class that joins grammatical structures

Compound Sentence

Result of entire sentences being joined

Subordinating conjunctions (subordinators)

Create complex sentences by joining grammatically unequal elements

Comma splice (comma fault)

Error when two independent sentences are joined solely by a comma

Run-on sentence

Error that occurs when two sentences w/o punctuation or conjunction are combined

Relative Clauses

Clauses connected by relatives (who, whom, whose, which, that); function adjectivally within a sentence

Relative Adverbs

Where, when, and why; when function adjectivally

Interrogatives

Question words; almost identical members as relative class
