Producers
Organisms, usually plants or algae, that produce their own food through photosynthesis.
Consumers
Organisms that eat other organisms, categorized as primary, secondary, and tertiary based on their position in the food chain.
Food Chain
A linear sequence of organisms where each organism is eaten by the next one in the chain.
Food Web
A complex network of interconnected food chains in an ecosystem that shows how different organisms relate through various paths of energy flow.
Trophic Levels
Each step in a food chain or web, with producers at the first level and consumers following.
Energy Flow
The transfer of energy from the sun to producers and then through various levels of consumers.
Biomagnification
The increase in concentration of toxins as you move up the food chain.
Decomposers
Organisms like bacteria and fungi that break down dead organisms and recycle nutrients back into the ecosystem.
Example of Food Chain
Grass → Grasshopper → Frog → Snake → Hawk.
Importance of Food Chains and Webs
They help us understand ecosystem balance, the impact of species changes, and the importance of biodiversity.
