Horseplay

Activities such as running that have no place in the lab.

Mental alertness

A state closely associated with safety that requires keeping one's mind and eyes on the task at hand and not talking to others while operating machinery.

Full operating speed

The speed a machine must reach before an operator begins using it.

Accident report

A document that must be completed if an injury requires medical attention and the person is accompanied to a hospital or physician.

Machine capacity

The safe operating limit of a machine; if the machine slows down noticeably during stock feeding, it is being loaded beyond this limit.

Major adjustments

Machine changes that must only be made when the machine is no longer running and the electrical cord has been disconnected from the power supply.

Metal trash can

The designated disposal container for rags or towels covered in flammable substances.

Yellow/Black caution tape

Visual marking that indicates only one student can be in that space at any one time.

Burred (mushroomed) heads

Deformations on tools such as chisels, punches, hammers, and nail sets that should be ground off before use.

Adjustable wrenches

Tools that should always be used with the jaws facing the direction of pull to eliminate slippage and prevent skinning or mashing knuckles.

Telescoping guard

A safety device on a saw that is only held out of the way when making a pocket cut.

Torque

The rotational force placed on a drill body which can be prevented by reducing pressure when the bit is protruding through stock.

Shop brush

A tool used to remove shavings, chips, and pieces of wood from machinery beds even when the machine is not running.

Safe machine attention

The method of getting an operator's attention by approaching from the front and speaking in a normal tone while gesturing with the hands.

Vents

Components that must always be opened for dust collection when using equipment.
