Asexual reproduction
mode of reproduction in which a new offspring is produced by a single parent. There is no
production of gametes, and no fusion of male and female gametes
Fission
After a period of growth, an organism splits into two separate organisms
Budding
results from the outgrowth of a part of a cell or body region
Fragmentation
a parent organism breaks into multiple fragments, each of which can develop into a genetically identical new individual
Sexual reproduction
involves the fusion of two sex cells called gametes (sperm and egg). The fusion of the sperm and the egg forms a zygote
Testis
Site of production and storage of male gametes (sperm) and testosterone
Ductus deferens
transports sperm to the ejaculatory duct
Seminal vesicles
Secrete fructose
Acrosome
Unique organelle that contains many acidic
enzymes. These enzymes help the sperm penetrate the egg’s coat
Ovary
Release oocytes (immature eggs) and secrete the hormones estrogen and progesterone
Oviduct (Fallopian tube)
Leads from the ovary to the uterus
Uterus
the hollow, pear-shaped organ where fertilized egg grows and develops
Ovarian Cycle
controlled by FSH and LH; Immature follicle consists of a primary oocyte and surrounding cells
Uterine Cycle
controlled by estrogen
