Magnetism
The force exerted by magnets when they attract or repel each other, caused by the motion of electric charges.

Magnetism (Aviation Definition)
The property of an object to attract certain metallic substances.
Ferrous materials
Materials composed of iron or iron alloys, such as soft iron, steel, and alnico.
Magnetic materials (Nonferrous)
At least 3 substances—nickel, cobalt, and gadolinium—that are magnetic to a limited degree.
Nonmagnetic
Substances that are not attracted to magnets, such as copper and gold.
Diamagnetic
Non-magnetic substances that are repelled by both poles of a magnet.
Attraction and Repulsion
The principle where opposite poles (North and South) attract each other, while like poles (North-North or South-South) repel.
Atoms
Tiny units making up every substance, containing electrons which are particles that carry electric charges.
Magnetic Fields
Invisible areas created around magnets that exert force on magnetic materials.
Ferromagnetism
The characteristic magnetic properties stemming from metals like iron, cobalt, and nickel.
Unpaired electrons
Atomic particles in magnetic materials that can be aligned to create a magnetic field.
