Properties/MOA
· ↓ contractility
· ↓ AV node conduction
Vasodilation
Effects/Adverse Rxn
· Bradycardia
· Hypotension
· Dizziness
· Gingival hyperplasia
· Constipation
· Congestive heart failure (due to ↓ contractility)
· Edema
Reflex tachycardia
Contraindications
Ø ♥ block
Ø CHF
Ø Hypotension
Impaired renal or liver function
Nursing Info.
· Check HR and BP, & ♥ block
· Used for HTN, angina, vasospasm (nimodipine)
· ↓ AV node conduction:
→ verapamil, diltiazem
· Promotes vasodilation:
→ nifedipine, nimodipine
· nimodipine indicated for subarachnoid hemorrhage vasospasm. The only indication for this drug!
Use w/caution in other drugs that ↓ AV node conduction (digoxin or β blockers)
