EDC (Estimated Date of Confinement)
The estimated date when confinement (birth) will occur; commonly used as the due date.
EDD (Estimated Due Date)
The estimated date when birth is expected to occur; another term for due date.
Preterm
Pregnancy ≥ 20 weeks but ≤ 37 weeks gestation.
Term
Pregnancy from 37 weeks to 42 weeks gestation.
Postdate
Pregnancy > 42 weeks gestation.
Viability
Ability of a fetus to live outside the uterus; defined as 24 weeks since LMP or fetal weight > 500 g.
Gravida
A person with a uterus who is pregnant.
Nulligravida
A person with a uterus who has never been pregnant.
Primigravida
Pregnant for the first time.
Multigravida
A person with a uterus who has had 2 or more pregnancies.
Parity
The number of pregnancies in which the fetus(es) have reached viability.
Primipara
A person who has completed one pregnancy.
Multipara
A person who has completed two or more pregnancies.
TPAL
T: Term; P: Preterm; A: Abortions; L: Living — a detailed pregnancy history notation.
G/P (Gravida/Para)
Notation system showing gravida and para counts.
G/TPAL
Gravida with TPAL details (Term, Preterm, Abortions, Living).

Labor and Delivery Nurse
Nurse who provides care during labor and birth, monitors mother and fetus, and supports the delivery process.
Postpartum Nurse
Nurse who cares for the mother after birth, monitors recovery and newborn bonding.
Nursery/NICU Nurse
Nurse who cares for healthy newborns or ill neonates in the nursery or NICU.
Doula/Childbirth Assistant
Nonclinical support person providing emotional and physical support during labor and birth.
Nurse Midwife
Advanced practice nurse who provides prenatal care, labor support, and postpartum care.
Lactation Consultant
Specialist who assists with breastfeeding techniques and challenges.
OB Tech
Obstetric technician or support staff assisting the obstetric team.
Obstetrician
Physician specializing in obstetrics and delivery of babies.
Pediatrician/Neonatologist
Physician specializing in newborn health; neonatologist focuses on ill or premature newborns.
Anesthesiologist
Physician who administers anesthesia for labor, delivery, or cesarean section.
Developmental Care Specialist (OT)
Therapist focusing on the developmental needs of newborns; occupational therapy involvement.
Feeding Specialist
Professional who assists with feeding concerns in newborns.
AFI
Amniotic Fluid Index; a measurement of amniotic fluid volume.
AMA
Advanced maternal age (typically 35 years or older at delivery).
BF
Breast feeding.
BPP
Biophysical Profile; a test combining ultrasound and fetal heart rate assessment.
C/S
Cesarean section.
CPD
Cephalopelvic disproportion; mismatch between baby’s head and mother’s pelvis hindering vaginal delivery.
EFM
Electronic fetal monitoring.
EGA
Estimated Gestational Age.
FHT
Fetal heart tones or tracing.
FSE
Fetal scalp electrode.
GBS
Group B Streptococcus.
GDM
Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.
GTT
Glucose tolerance test.
IUPC
Intrauterine Pressure Catheter.
