What is amniocentesis?
Have to do ultrasound since we want to avoid placenta and just get amniotic fluid
What is biophysical profile?
Non invasive, 8 is a good score, determines health of the fetus by HR, RR, movement, muscle tone, amniotic fluid
What is chorionic villus sampling?
Piece of placenta that looks like villi is removed to test at a lab
What is natural childbirth?
Done without analgesic or anesthesia,
What are goals of preconception care?
Limit smoking, alcohol, improve protein, increase folic acid, increase iron way BEFORE trying for baby (for birthing person and partner)
What are risk factors for adverse pregnancies?
Alcohol misuse, anti epileptic drugs, smoking, hypertension, STIs, obesity, rubella, hypothyroidism
What is good to know about a pregnant women’s menstrual history?
Age started, # of days in cycle, flow characteristics, discomforts, use of contraception
How do we infer when a baby will be due?
Use first day of last menstrual period, subtract 3 months, add seven days then add a year (ultrasound is best for dating when a pregnancy started
What is gravida?
A pregnant person (primigravida/secungravida)
What is para?
A person who has produced one or more viable offspring carrying a pregnancy 20 weeks or more (primi, multi, nulli)
What is TPAL?
term births= >37 weeks, preterm birth= 20-37 weeks, abortion= pregnancies ending before 20 weeks, living children
How do we measure the baby when women is pregnant?
The number of centimeter are about the same as the # of weeks of gestation, fundal height
What is diagonal conjugate?
Measure left to right from until feel bones below vagina
What is true conjugate?
Measuring instead vagina just under babies head to see the amount of space you will have for birth
What are visits needed while pregnant?
Every 4 weeks until 28 weeks, every 2 weeks 29-36 then every week until birth, birthing persons in USA delivered by 41 weeks
What should we look out for in birthing persons?
Severe nausea, abd pain, headaches that cannot be stopped, bleeding, black spots in vision
What is marker screening test and Michal screening test?
Helps screen for chromosomal abnormalities, nuchal checks for fluid behind the neck
What is difference between no stress test and contraction stress test?
Uses no medication and hopes baby moves about 2 times but other uses oxytocin and watches babies reaction to contractions
What are first trimester discomforts?
Urinary frequency, leokorrhea, cravings, constipation, fatigue, aching breasts
What are second trimester discomforts?
Backache, bloating, flatulence, hemorrhoids, varicosities on vulva and legs
What are third trimester discomforts?
Unable to breath well, SOB, edema of ankle and feet, heartburn, indigestion, urinary frequency
How does sexual activity change during pregnancy?
You can have this up to birth but refrain if there is bleeding
