Charter
A document granting special privileges, establishing a colony's authority and structure.
Corporate Colonies
Colonies that were operated by joint-stock companies, such as Jamestown.
Royal Colonies
Colonies under the direct authority and rule of the king's government, like Virginia after 1624.
Proprietary Colonies
Colonies under the authority of individuals granted charters by the king, such as Maryland and Pennsylvania.
Indentured Servants
Young people who worked for a specific period in exchange for passage and sustenance, usually four to seven years.
Mayflower Compact
An early agreement signed by the Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower to create a government based on majority rule.
Act of Toleration
The first colonial statute that granted religious freedom to all Christians in Maryland, enacted in 1649.
Bacon's Rebellion
A revolt led by Nathaniel Bacon against the government of Virginia due to grievances of small farmers.
Halfway Covenant
A religious solution for maintaining Puritan church membership allowing partial church membership without a conversion experience.
Triangular Trade
A pattern of trade among the Americas, Europe, and Africa involving goods and enslaved people.
Quakers
Members of the Religious Society of Friends, advocating for equality, nonviolence, and internally derived religious authority.
Georgia
Founded in 1732 as the last of the British colonies, meant as a buffer against Spanish Florida and a place for debtors.
Mercantilism
An economic policy where colonies exist to enrich the parent country through trade and resource provision.
Navigation Acts
Laws enforcing trade regulations that mandated colonial trade be conducted on English or colonial ships.
Fundamental Orders of Connecticut
The first written constitution in American history that established a representative government.
The Dominion of New England
A combined administrative unit of several colonies created in 1686 to enforce royal authority.
Great Migration
The movement of about 15,000 Puritans to Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 1630s due to persecution in England.
