ecological community
a group of interacting populations of different species living in the same area
keystone species
a single species that produces a major impact on its ecosystem and is necessary to regulate the structure of an entire community
trophic cascade
powerful indirect interactions that can control entire ecosystems; can be top-down or bottom-up
biotic factor
a living part of an ecosystem (plants, animals, bacteria, etc.)
population
a group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area
carrying capacity
largest number of individuals in a population that an environment can support
limiting factor
a resource or environmental condition which limits the growth, distribution or abundance of an organism or population within an ecosystem; can be biotic (living) or abiotic (nonliving)
genetic drift
a change in the gene pool of a population due to chance

a measure of how acidic or basic water is

compound that forms hydrogen ions (H+) in solution and has a pH less than 7
