Why is pediatric nutrition important?
Essential for growth and development, impacts immunity and cognition.

Decreases with age.

What are the components of breast milk?

What characterizes foremilk?
Thinner, lower in fat, and higher in lactose.
What characterizes hindmilk?
Creamier, richer, and higher in fat.
How many calories are in breast milk?

What are the characteristics of colostrum?
High in protein, lower in fat and sugar, high in zinc. Smaller in volume
What are the indications of formula milk?
Maternal infection like HIV, lactose intolerance in the baby, medications that are not safe for the baby, insufficient breast milk
When should complementary feeding start?
Start at 6 months, nutrient-rich, age-appropriate, safe foods.
What anthropometric measures are used in nutritional assessment?
Weight, length/height, head circumference, weight for length, BMI.
