Worldviews

The values, beliefs, attitudes, and assumptions that we have about the world.

Life worlds

The context of how we experience everyday life, influenced by personal experience, family, friends, and society.

Frames of reference

How we make our decisions in life, which are in line with our own personal values, personal beliefs and ideas about life. Can result in prejudice and stereotypes.

Ethnicity

Relates to a group of people that identify with each other due to shared attributes that distinguish them from others (e.g., nationality, racial group, cultural background).

Culture

Something that is not biologically inherited, but is taught over the years, usually by family, the community or from those older than us

Socially constructed

An idea made up or created by collaborative consensus and accepted by people living in a particular society.

Beliefs

Things we are certain or we hold certain to be true or real without conviction.

Attitudes

The persistent ways of thinking that we have about ourselves, about others and the world around us, often based on life experiences and conditioning.

Values

What a person believes is important and how they choose to live their life and their ideas of what is right and what is wrong.

Assumptions

Things that we take for granted, or our automatic thinking or responses to things, often established from early childhood.

Stereotyping

A preconceived notion about something or someone or a particular group of people that is often prejudiced.

Norms

Accepted rules of behavior; either acceptable or unacceptable behavior based in a particular society or group.

Personal bias

Prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another usually in a way that’s considered unfair

Subjective

Based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.

Nationality

The status of belonging to a particular nation.

Prejudice

Preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.

Cultural background

The cultural environment in which someone was raised or lives, including factors such as ethnicity, religion, language, and traditions.

Perception

The ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses.

Cultural safety

An environment that is safe for people; where there is no assault, challenge or denial of their identity, of who they are and what they need.

Personal Values

The abstract ideals that shape one’s thinking and behavior
