Neural Tissue
Tissue located in the brain and spinal cord that conducts electrical impulses to convey information or instructions from one body region to another.

Neuron
The cell type responsible for conducting impulses in neural tissue.

Simple Squamous Epithelium
Epithelial tissue found in the alveoli, corneas, and kidney tubules that functions to allow the movement of gases.

Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Epithelial tissue located in the thyroid and kidneys that functions in secretion and absorption.

Simple Columnar Epithelium
Epithelial tissue located in the lining of organs that functions in protection, secretion, and absorption.

Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Epithelial tissue found in areas like the scalp that functions to protect against abrasion.

Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
Epithelial tissue located in the upper respiratory tract whose function is to protect and catch particles.

Transitional Epithelium
Epithelial tissue found in the bladder, pelvis, and ureters that permits expansion and recoil after stretching.

Bone Tissue
Supporting connective tissue located in the skeletal system that provides support and protection.
Osteocyte
The medical terminology for a bone cell.

Hyaline Cartilage
Cartilage tissue located at the ends of joints, nose, and respiratory passages that provides stiff but flexible support.
Chondrocyte
The medical terminology for a cartilage cell.

Elastic Cartilage
Cartilage tissue located in the external ear and larynx that allows distortion but resumes its shape.

Fibrocartilage
Cartilage tissue located between vertebrae that functions in shock absorption, stability, and support.
Blood Tissue
Fluid connective tissue located in the circulatory system that functions to transport a variety of materials throughout the body.

Erythrocyte
The medical terminology for a red blood cell.

Leukocyte
The medical terminology for a white blood cell.
Areolar Tissue
Connective tissue proper located beneath the skin that binds skin to underlying structures and fills space between muscles.

Adipose Tissue
Connective tissue proper located mainly under the skin and internal organs that functions in insulation, cushioning joints and organs, and energy storage.
Adipocyte
The cell type found in adipose tissue.

Reticular Tissue
Connective tissue proper located in the liver that provides a supporting framework.

Dense Regular Tissue
Connective tissue proper made of collagen fibers, located in tendons and ligaments, that functions to hold body parts together.

Skeletal Muscle
Voluntary muscle tissue found in muscles that produces movement of the trunk and limbs, chewing, swallowing, and breathing.

Smooth Muscle
Involuntary muscle tissue located in hollow organs that moves material through tracts, constricts blood vessels, and empties the bladder.

Cardiac Muscle
Involuntary, striated muscle tissue with single nuclei located in the heart that circulates blood and maintains blood pressure.
