Cell membrane
Serves as a boundary. It regulates what enters and leaves the cell. It is selectively permeable (semipermeable): allows some molecules to cross the membrane, while others can not. Found in both animals and plants
Cytoplasm
Fluid portion of the cell outside of the nucleus. Found in both animals and plants
Nucleus
Stores DNA, which has genetic information (including the codes that direct protein synthesis) Found in both animals and plants.
Free ribosomes
Where proteins are produced. Found in both animals and plants
Endoplasmic reticulum
Involved in the production of lipids and proteins that will either become part of the cell membrane or be released from the cell. Found in both animals and plants
Vesicle
Carries proteins and lipids from the Golgi apparatus to other parts of the cell or from outside of the cell membrane into the cell. Found in both animals and plants
Golgi apparatus
Modifies and sorts proteins and lipids that have been synthesized in the cell. Found in both animals and plants
Mitochondria
Location of cellular respiration, This is a process that converts the energy stored in sugar to ATP, which the cell uses for energy. Found in both animals and plants
Cilia
Hair-like projections on the outside of a cell used for movement and transport. Found in animals
Cytoskeleton
Helps the cell maintain its shape and is also involved in movement of structures within the cell. Also, helps cells divide during mitosis. Found in both animals and plants
Vacuole
Storage of substances. Plant cells contain a large one that takes up 90% of its volume. Found in both animals and plants
Lysosome
Breaks down food particles, damaged organelles, or microbes with the use of digestive enzymes. Found in animals
Cell wall
Provides support and protection outside of the cell membrane. It is made mostly of cellulose (a carbohydrate). Found in plants
Chloroplast
Uses sun's energy, water, and carbon dioxide to produce sugars and oxygen in a process called photosynthesis. Found in plants
Flagella
Whip-like projection helpful in moving cell around. Found in animals
Nucleolus
Where ribosomes are made. Found in animals and plants
