Nandina domestica
Heavenly bamboo; an erect shrub reaching 2m tall with bi- to tri-pinnately compound evergreen leaves and bright red berries.
Taxus x media “Hicksii”
Hick’s English yew; narrow and upright coniferous shrub with reddish bark and modified seed cones called an aril.
Sequoiadendron giganteum
Giant sequoia; reaching heights of 50−85m, with awl-shaped leaves and soft reddish bark.
Tsuga heterophylla
Western hemlock; large evergreen with a drooping lead shoot and two distinctive white bands of stomata on the underside of the needles.
Cornus stolonifera
Red twig shrub dogwood; deciduous shrub with red stems in winter and veins that meet at the tip of each leaf.
Euonymus alatus
Winged euonymus; deciduous shrub notable for four corky ridges or wings on the stems; turns bright red in fall.

Paperbark maple; small to medium deciduous tree with smooth orange-red bark that peels in thin, papery layers.

American sweetgum; deciduous tree with palmately lobed leaves and bark that attaches to twigs in plates edgewise, giving a reptilian form.

Staghorn sumac; deciduous tree with pinnately compound leaves 25−55cm long and stems covered in rust-coloured hairs; spreads by underground rhizomes.
Arctostaphylos uva ursi
Kinnickinnick; a procumbent woody groundcover with small, thick, shiny evergreen leaves and red berries.
Vinca minor
Periwinkle; a trailing ground cover with opposite, leathery, glossy dark green leaves and five-lobed violet-purple flowers.
Parthenoscissus tricuspidata
Boston ivy; a deciduous woody vine that attaches via branched tendrils tipped with sticky disks.
Wisteria floribunda
Japanese wisteria; deciduous vine with powerful woody clockwise-twining stems and poisonous, brown, velvety, bean-like seed pods.
