Humanities

Assumptions of Art

Art is Universal

As we have known, art has existed so long as man labored to express his thoughts and feelings. No matter the race, time, culture, and social context, man has expressed his beliefs and needs through art. This is a universal experience of man and from this arises the idea that art is universal. It traverses time, place, and socio-cultural boundaries.

Art is not Nature

A realist painting, no matter how realistically it represents an aspect of nature, is still a work of man. Art is an expression of man's interpretation of nature. Nature is simply the bedrock from which man creates his own image of reality. It is assumed, therefore, that art is distinct from nature.

Art Involves Experience

When one knows art, it is not known as a mere fact but as an experience. Knowing art requires one to engage it or perceive it. A painter is not a painter if he had not held a brush and worked out a beautiful painting. Similarly, one cannot adore a painting's beauty without having seen it, or judge a particular movie to be good without having watched it. Perception is a necessary aspect of art as experience.

Types of ART

Visual Art

is art that is perceived by the sense of sight. Any visual artwork can either be a graphic art or plastic art. Graphic arts are printed on two-dimensional surfaces such as painting, drawing, photography, etc. Plastic arts (Greek plastikos, meaning to mold or to form) are works that have three-dimensional form such as architectural designs, sculpture, clothing, jewelry, etc.

Performing Arts

an art that involves movement, speaking, and gestures. They include theater, play, dance, and music.

Literary Arts

is an art involve the use of words to express or communicate emotions to readers. They include works of fiction, non-fiction, drama, and poetry.

Popular Arts

an art that include works that exist in the form of films, or appear in newspapers, magazines, radio, and television. They are gay and lively since they are intended for viewing by the ordinary and general public.

Gustatory Art

an art of the cuisine pertain to activity that involve skills in food preparation.

Decorative Arts

involve the production of visual objects like bowls, chandeliers, and furniture for beautifying houses and offices. They are also referred to as applied arts.
