Susceptibility
Lack of resistance to a disease.
Immunity
Ability to ward off disease.
Innate immunity
Defenses against any pathogen.
Adaptive immunity
Immunity or resistance to a specific pathogen.
Toll-like receptors (TLRs)
Receptors on host cells that attach to pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs).
Epidermis
Consists of tightly packed cells with Keratin, a protective protein.
Mucous membranes
Mucus traps microbes and Ciliary escalator transports microbes trapped in mucus away from the lungs.
Ciliary escalator
Transports microbes trapped in mucus away from the lungs.
Lacrimal apparatus
Washes eye.
Saliva
Washes microbes off.
Urine
Flows out and removes microbes.
Vaginal secretions
Flow out and removes microbes.
Phagocytosis
Ingestion of microbes or particles by a cell, performed by phagocytes.
Fever
Abnormally high body temperature.
Interferons (IFNs)
IFN-a and IFN-b cause cells to produce antiviral proteins that inhibit viral replication; IFN-g causes neutrophils and macrophages to phagocytize bacteria.
