Radiation that changes direction and loses energy after interacting with matter, serving as the primary source of occupational exposure.
Attenuation
The reduction in radiation energy or intensity as an x-ray beam passes through an absorbing material.
Radiopaque
Describing materials with high attenuation properties that absorb x-rays easily and appear light or white on a radiograph.
Radiolucent
Describing materials with low attenuation properties that allow x-rays to pass through easily and appear dark or black on a radiograph.
Milliampere-Seconds (mAs)
The product of milliamperes and exposure time in seconds (mAรseconds=mAs), which directly controls the quantity of x-ray production.
Kilovoltage Peak (kVp)
The potential difference applied across the x-ray tube that controls the penetrating power, quality, and overall energy of the x-ray beam.
15% Rule
A rule stating that increasing kVp by 15% requires halving mAs to maintain equivalent image receptor exposure, and vice versa.
Inverse Square Law
A physical law stating that radiation intensity is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source (I2โI1โโ=D12โD22โโ).
Half-Value Layer (HVL)
The thickness of a specified absorbing material (such as aluminum) required to reduce x-ray beam intensity to 50% of its original value.
Positive Beam Limitation (PBL)
An automatic collimation system that limits the x-ray beam dimensions to match the size of the selected image receptor.
Radiographic Grid
A device containing lead strips and radiolucent interspace material placed between the patient and image receptor to absorb scatter radiation.
Automatic Rescaling
Computer software processing that automatically adjusts digital image display brightness and contrast based on receptor exposure.
Penumbra
Geometric unsharpness or edge blurring on a radiographic image, reduced by using a smaller focal spot size, larger SID, or smaller OID.
Diagnostic Yield
The amount of clinically useful diagnostic information produced by a medical imaging procedure relative to its input factors.
Diagnostic Efficacy
The accuracy with which a diagnostic medical image represents the patient's true medical condition without interference from artifacts.
Collimator Assembly
A beam-limiting device mounted to the x-ray tube housing that projects a light field to define the size and shape of the x-ray exposure field.
Bucky Assembly
A mechanism beneath a table or inside an upright wall stand containing a tray to hold the image receptor and an oscillating radiographic grid.
Overhead Tube Crane (OTC)
