Demographic Transition Model
A model describing how birth rates and death rates change over time, typically divided into four or five stages.
Stage 1
Characterized by high mortality and high birth rates, with little to no population growth.
Stage 2
Mortality rates fall while birth rates remain high, leading to rapid population growth.
Stage 3
Birth rates begin to decline as mortality rates remain low, causing a decrease in the rate of population growth.
Stage 4
Both birth and death rates are low, stabilizing the population growth, with a beehive-shaped population pyramid.
Stage 5
A potential stage where fertility rates drop below replacement level, leading to a shrinking population.
Population Pyramid
A graphical representation of the age and sex distribution of a population.
Fertility Rate
The average number of children born to a woman over her lifetime.
Mortality Rate
The frequency of death in a given population over a specified period.
Socio-economic Modernization
The process of transition to modern economies and social structures, affecting demographic factors.
High-Effectiveness Medication
Medicines that have been widely used to lower mortality rates in developing countries.
