What are the two models of the solar sytem?
Geocentric and Heliocentric models.
What is the idea of a heliocentric model?
It is the idea that the sun is the centre of the solar system and everything orbits around it.
What is the idea of the geocentric model?
It is the idea the the earth is the centre of the solar system and everything orbits around it.
Which model of the solar system do we currently follow?
We currently follow the newer idea of the heliocentric model.
What are the phases of the moon in order?
New moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, (last) third quarter, waning crescent.
Who discovered the heliocentric model?
Galileo Galeli.
What is rotation?
Rotation is when the earth rotates around its axis.
How long does rotation take?
It takes 24 hours.
What does rotation cause?
It cause days.
What is revolution?
It is when earth orbits the sun in one full orbit.
How long does revolution take?
It takes 365 days.
What does revolution cause?
It causes years.
What is the reason for seasons?
When the earth is orbiting around the sun and its axis, whichever hemisphere is facing the sun will have summer and the side away will have winter and spring on one side and autumn.
Why are days longer in summer?
The days are longer in summer because that hemisphere is closer to the sun and tilted meaning that the Sun appears higher in the sky and takes longer to set giving you longer days.
Why are days shorter in winter?
The days are shorter in winter because that hemisphere is further from the sun and tilted meaning that the Sun appears lower in the sky and sets earlier giving you shorter days.
Why do tides happen?
Because of the gravity of the moon pulling the tide.
Why do high tides occur?
High tides occur because that side of the earth is facing the moon meaning that the gravity is stronger cause the earth to bulge towards the moon and rise the tide.
Why do low tides occur?
Low tides occur because that side of the earth is facing away from the moon meaning that the gravity is weaker causing the earth to drop away from the moon and lower the tide.
What is a spring tide?
It is when the sun and moon are aligned meaning that the gravity is stronger and causing higher high tides and lower low tides.
What is a neap tide?
It is when the moon and sun is at a 90 degree angle making the sun pull the moon and give weak tides due to the lack of the moons gravity.
What is a solar eclipse?
Moon blocks the suns light from reaching earth.
What is a lunar eclipse?
Earth blocks the suns light from reaching the moon.
