What is physics
"knowledge of nature" study of matter and motion, study of force and energy
You have just finished using the hotplate when the bell rings
clean up everything including the hotplate's power cord and ask the teacher if you can leave the still hot hotplate
A good way to work with your lab partner while writing up the lab is
work on the questions and calculations together. If you can't figure a question out ask your teacher.
For a scientist a fact is ____________.
something that is observable
In the equation for pressure P= f/a force is_____________ the area.
directly proportional
What is the mathematical relationship between velocity of a falling object and time?
linear growth
What is the mathematical relationship between the distance an object falls and time?
quadratic growth
The graph below shows that pressure is ___________ the volume of a sample of gas.
inversely proportional to

When testing the efficacy of a medication some patients are given the medication, but other patients are given a pill that doesn't contain any medication. The patients without the medication are called the ___________.
control group
What is a model
an imitation of complexities of the real system, developed from what we know and are tested for how they can predict a system
How are models used in science
to show how atoms/ molecules look, explain how atoms connect/ react, make tiny/ invisible things easy to understand
three reasons why the non-luminous flame is preferred
1) easier to control/ cleaner
2) It is easier to find the hottest point with copper wire it turns green, orange, and black when you take it out
3) Uses reverse process, it can undo what the luminous flame does to the dish, at first it is covered in soot then turns white/light color
In the Bunsen Burner lab what causes the formation of the soot in the luminous flame?
There is a restricted amount of oxygen, and it prevents the gas to not burn fully, U CANNOT COMPLETE COMBUSTION formation of the soot comes from unburnt carbon
Why does the soot disappear in the non-luminous flame?
flame provides enough oxygen for complete combustion, it fully burns all the carbon allowing the soot to disappear
What is scientific method
a problem solving method based on repeatable facts and logic
What is theory
an explanation stood by facts can predict future events bc its well tested
What is hypothesis
PROPOSED explanation of something, it is an idea. Almost all hypotheses change as new facts emerge
What is law
Describes what always happens in nature
What is an experiment
something to test your hypothesis
Control
the part of the experiment that stays the same
What is a dependent variable?
variable that is measured
What is an independent variable
variable that is manipulated
inversely proportional
one thing big, one small (opposites)
directly proportional
one big, other big
relationship of pressure to area
inversely
pressure to force
directly
force and area
directly
numerator is almost always
direct
denominator is almost always
inversely
Quadratic Growth
curve up and increase bigger each time

inverse growth
curve down

distance equals
time squared
sun is doing
e=mc2 sun converts mass to energy
