Structure and function of esophagus
long muscular tube that moves food into the stomach
Structure and function of stomach
a J shaped organ that digests/breaks down food
Structure and function of small intestine
bundle of tubes that carries the chyme from the stomach to the
large intestine. Made up of three parts: duodenum, jejunum, and ileum
Structure and function of large intestine
bundle of tubes that takes the last bits of the digested food and absorbs any water left over in it to make a hard stool. Made up of the: ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, and the rectum
Structure and function of pancreas
The pancreas is a gun shaped organ that creates insulin to help break
down food
Structure and function of Liver
Produces bile that is transported to the gallbladder, where it is stored and
released into the GI system to help digest fats
Explain where in the body are lactase and lipase enzymes are produced and where they function
- Lactase is produced in the small intestine and its function is to help digest
lactose in the small intestine
- Lipase is produced in the pancreas, mouth, and stomach and its function
is to break down fats
Explain how the product of lactase and lipase was detected in each experiment
- Lactase is measured by looking at how high the glucose concentration is,
the higher the glucose concentration, the more lactase
- Lipase was detected based on the discoloration of the pancreatin
mixture
Explain the function of bile and its role in emulsification
Bile helps dilute and buffer acids in chyme as well as emulsifies lipids to aid the action of pancreatic lipase
