The National Artist of the Philippines
The highest recognition the Philippine government can give to a person of the arts.
“Pambansang Alagad ng Sining ng Pilipinas”
Originally instituted as an Award, it was elevated to the status of Order in 2003
Fernando C. Amorsolo (Cueto)
The Philippines’ first National Artist on April 28, 1972.
He was a portraitist and painter of rural Philippine landscapes.
He was given the title as the “Grand Old Man of Philippine Art.”

Carlos “Botong” Francisco
He was posthumously awarded as National Artist for Painting in 1973.

Guillermo Estrella Tolentino
He was designated as a National Artist of the Philippines for Sculpture in 1973.
He is consider as the “Father of Philippine Arts” because of his great works like the famous “Bonifacio Monument” symbolizing Filipinos cry for freedom located in intersection if EDSA and Rizal Avenue and “The Oblation” in UP signifying academic freedom.
He specialized in commemorative sculptures of historical figures that are monumental and grand.

Hernando Ocampo
He was a National Artist for Painting in 1991.

Jovita Fuentes
She was awarded National Artist for Music in 1976.
She was an acclaimed theater actress, performing in various theater productions in Europe.
Her performances include the portrayal of Cio-Cio-San in Madame Butterfly, Liu Yu in Turandot, and Mimi in La Boheme.
Lucio San Pedro
He was awarded National Artist for Music in 1991.
He is known for Ugoy ng Duyan.
He was also a conductor of many respective bands that time such as Peng Kong Grand Mason Concert Band, the San Pedro Band of Angono, and Banda Angono Numero Uno.
Levi Celerio
He was awarded National Artist for Music and Literature in 1997.
He is one of the most prolific composers and lyricist in the Philippine music history (4,000 songs).
He is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Record as the only person in the world to make music by using leaf.
He is credited for Ako ay may Singsing (Kapampangan), Alibangbang (Visayan), and even the Ang Pasko ay Sumapit at Ang Pipit
Francisco Feliciano
He was awarded National Artist for Music in 2014.
His works have been sung and have won greatest choirs of the country, like the UP Madrigal Singers, UST Singers, and the Novo Concertante in Manila

He was awarded National Artist for Music in 2018.
One of the most well-known composers in contemporary music.
He is the composer of Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika (1978), Paraiso (1991), Tuwing Umuulan at Kapiling Ka, and Da Coconut Nut.
Francisca Reyes-Aquino
She was awarded National Artist for Dance in 1973.
She is known as a dancer and researcher of Philippine Folk Dance. Her research titled Philippine Folk Dances and Games documented local forms of celebrations and rituals was published in 1926.
Leonor Goquingco
She was awarded National Artist for Dance in 1976.
She was known by the names such as Trailblazer, Mother of Philippine Theater Dance, and Dean of Filipino Performing Art Critics.
Her most elaborate project was the Filipinescas: Philippine Life, Legend, and Lore. This performance was toured around the world from 1961 to 1970.
Lucrecia Reyes-Urtula
She was awarded National Artist for Dance in 1988.
Throughout her career, she has made dances that showcase traditional dances and festivals in the Philippines such as mountain dances, Spanish dances, and Muslim Dances. These were performed by the Bayanihan Dance Company throughout the world.
Her major workds include Singkil (inspired by a Maranao poem) and Vinta (showcasing the Filipinos’ maritime skills).
Ramon Arevalo Obusan
He was awarded National Artist for Dance in 2006.
He was an accomplished stage designer, artistic director, choreographer, and dancer. He is recognized as a promoter of Philippine traditional dance through his performances and cultural research.
He received various awards for his works such as Grand Prix Award in France (1982) for his docu titled Sayaw, the Patnubay Kalinangan award given by the City of Manila (1992) and Gawad CCP Para sa Sining Para sa Sayaw.
Alice Reyes
She was awarded National Artist for Dance in 2014.
She went to the United States and trained in modern dance and jazz.
Some of her major works are Amada (1969), Itim-Asu (1971), and Bayanihan Remembered (1987).
She strengthened the status and legitimacy of modern dance in the Philippines through series of workshops, training, cultural outreach programs, and television performances.
Lamberto Avellana
He was awarded National Artist for Theater and Film in 1976.
Also known as the Boy Wonder of the Philippine Movies, he is not only a film director but also an established director.
He is credited as the first to use the point-of-view camera technique that transformed film narration.
His first film, Sakay, was critically acclaimed and won Best Picture.
Asian Film Festival - Anak Dalita (1956) which won grand prize.
Tokyo Film Fest - Badjao (1957) - Best Director in Asia.
Daisy Avellana
She was awarded National Artist for Theater in 1996.
She was a Filipinna theater actress and director. She is recognized for bringing legitimacy to theater as an art form through quality and outstanding productions of both local and foreign classic plays.
Together with her husband, they made theater arts popular and closer to the people, using radio and television to propagate it.
Some of her major work / performances are Macbeth in Black (1959) and Walang Sugat (1971).
Honorata ‘atang’ Dela Rama
She was awarded National Artist for Theater and Music in 1987.
Known as the Queen of Kundiman, her acting career began at a very young age.
At the age of 7, she starred in many Spanish zarzuelas.
Lino Brocka
He was awarded National Artist for Cinema in 1997 (posthumously).
Tinimbang ka Ngunit kulang (1974), Maynila: Sa Kuko ng Liwanag (1975), Makiusap ka sa Diyos (1991).
His main characters represented the marginalized and provided masses characters they could relate to with dignity.
Ishmael Bernal
He was awarded National Artist for Film in 2001 (posthumously).
He is considered to be one of the geniuses of the Philippine Cinema, and known for his melodramas that dealt with woman’s empowerment and morality.
Some of his major works are Himala (1932), Nunal sa Tubig (1976), and Pinulot ka Lang sa Lupa (1987).
Eddie Romero
He was awarded National Artist for Cinema in 2003.
His films were ambitious and practical at the same time and are described in his National Artist Citation as ‘delivered in an utterly simple style - minimalist, but never empty, always calculated, precise and functional, but never predictable.
His major works include Ganito Kami Noon… Paano Kaya Ngayon and Banta ng Kahapon.
Salvador Bernal
He was awarded National Artist for Theater in 2003.
He is regarded as the Father of Philippine Stage Design.
He is a generous artist, Badong, as called by close friends, sharing his knowledge though workshops at UP, ADMU, and CCP programs.
His major works are Gumising Ka, Maruja (costume design) and Oro, Plata, Mata (costume design).
Ronald Allan Poe (Fernando Poe Jr.)
He was awarded National Artist for Cinema in 2006 (posthumously).
He is dubbed as the King of Philippine Movies having starred, produced directed more than 200 films.
Some of his major works are Batang Maynila (1962), Ang Probinsyano (1996), ang Ang Panday Series (1980 - 1984).
Kidlat Tahimik
He was awarded National Artist for Cinema in 2018.
Eric de Guia, a Baguio Native, was considered by many as the Father of Independent Philippine Cinema.
Some of his major works are Japanese Summers of a Filipino Fudoshi (1996) and Mababangong Bangungot / Perfumed Nightmare (1977).
His films are considered examples of Third Cinema, define as commentary on the exploitation and oppression of the developed countries on less-developed nations.
Amado Hernandez
He was awarded National Artist for Literature in 1973 (posthumously)
He was a writer and stalwart of the laborers. He believed that his art should act as a conscience of society, correcting and calling attention to what is needed.
As a writer, he was the first one who drew away from the flowery and ornate quality of the Tagalog language and instead wrote in prose that is much closer to everyday spoken language.
Some of his major works are Mga Ibong Mandaragit (1969) and Luha ng Buwaya (1972).
Jose Garcia Villa
He was awarded National Artist for Literature in 1973.
He used the pen name Doveglion (dove, eagle, lion) and is regarded as on e of the best contemporary poets in the world.
He is known for introducing the reversed consonance rhyme scheme and using punctuation marks such as comma in a novel and lyrical way.
Some of his noatable works are Foonote to Youth, Many Voices, and Poems by Doveglion.
Nick Joaquin
He was awarded National Artist for Literature in 1976.
He play with his pen name, Quijano de Manila.
His major work include The Woman Who Had Two Navels, Almanac for Manilenos, and Rizal in Saga.
His style is defined flowery and Spanish influenced English, which critics coin as Joaquinesque
Carlos Romulo
He was awarded National artist for Literature in 1982.
We know his as the first Asian president of the United Nations General Assembly.
He had written and published over 18 books and received a Pulitzer Award for Journalism for a series of articles foreseeing WWII. At that time, he was the only Asian to do so.
His notable works are The United (Novel) and I Walked with Heroes (Autobiography).
Francisco Arcellana
He was awarded National Artist for Literature in 1990.
He was one of the pioneers of the lyrical prose-poetic forms in Filipino short stories written in English.
Some of his works are the Francisco Arellana Sampler and Poetry and Politics: The State of Original Writing in English in the Philippines Today.
Nestor Vicente Gonzales (N.V.M. Gonzales)
He was awarded National Artist for Literature in 1997.
A writer who specialized in fiction.
His works have touched the hearts of not just Filipinos but the other nationalities as well, with his works being translated to numerous other languages such as English, Chinese, German, Russian and Indonesian.
His works include Seven Hills Away, The Winds of April, and the Novel of Justice: Selected Essays 1968 - 1994.
F. Sionil Jose
He was awarded National Artist for Literature in 2001.
He is one of the most prolific contemporary Filipino Writers. His best workers are his literature in English.
He wrote about nationalism and social justice. His works are translated into different language.
His major works include a five-part saga: The Pretenders, Tree, My Brother, My Executioner, Mass, and Po-on.
Virgilio Almario
He was awarded National Artist for Literature in 2003.
He brough back to life the Filipino traditional poetic forms.
He has produced 12 volumes of poetry and 10 books of criticism and anthology under his pen name Rio Alma.
His major works are Makinasyon, Peregrinasyon, and Doktrinang Anakpawis.
He was elected as the chairperson of the NCCA in January 2017
Alejandro Reyes Roces
He was awarded National Artist for Literature in 2003.
He was regarded as one of the best writers of comic short stories and mostly remembered for his widely anthologized My Brother’s Peculiar Chicken.
He personified his love for the country as he fought as a guerilla fighter during WWII and fought the tyranny of Marial Law.
We Filipinos are Mild Drinkers and Fiesta are some of his major works.
Bienvenido Lumbera
He was awarded National Artist for Literature in 2006.
He is a multi-awarded poet, writer, critic and dramatist. He is recognized as one of the literary giants of Philippines literature, cultural studies, and film.
He has also founded several literary organizations like Pamana ng Panitikan ng Pilipinas ang Manunuri ng Prilkulang Pilipino. These groups were intrumental in bringing back democracy after Martial Law.
His major works are Noli Me Tangere: The Musical and Nasa Puso ang Amerika.
Lazaro Francisco
He was awarded National Artist for Literature in 2009 (posthumously).
He is the Master of Tagalog Novels, credited to have written 12 novels that were serialized in the weekly Tagalog magazine, Liwayway.
His works exemplify the writer’s commitment to nationalism. His skill in bringing to life his characters with his mastery of Tagalog language makes the readers feel proud to be a Filipino.
His major works are Singsing na Pangkasal, Sugat ng Alaala, ang Maganda pa ang Daigdig.
