Apartheid
(1948-1994) an Afrikaans word meaning "separateness," it was a system of racial segregation in South Africa enforced through legislation by the National Party (NP), the governing party from 1948 to 1994
Pass Laws
Apartheid laws designed to control the movement of Africans who were required to carry passes with them at all times and were only allowed to be in certain areas of South Africa
Bantu Homelands
also known as Bantustans, they were areas of South Africa where black South Africans were forced to live; they were overcrowded and were not the best agricultural lands which were held for white South Africans
Nelson Mandela
(1918-2013) an anti-apartheid leader of the African National Congress who was imprisoned by the Apartheid government until he was released after 27 years and became the first black South African elected president of the country
Desmond Tutu
(born 1933) Archbishop of the South African Anglican Church in South Africa who was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end Apartheid
