pGLO Plasmid
A plasmid that contains the gene for Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) and a gene for ampicillin resistance.
Transformation Efficiency
The measure of how effectively DNA alters the bacterial cells, calculated as the total number of transformed cells divided by the amount of DNA spread on the plate.
Germicide
A substance or agent that destroys harmful microorganisms.
Disinfectant
A growth-inhibiting agent used on inanimate objects to kill microorganisms.
Antiseptic
A growth-inhibiting agent used on living tissues to prevent infection.
Broad Spectrum Germicide
A germicide that is effective against a wide variety of pathogens.
Control Group
Groups in an experiment that serve as a standard for comparison, which do not receive the treatment.
Dilution
The process of reducing the concentration of a substance in a solution.
Gram Staining
A method of staining used to classify bacteria based on the characteristics of their cell walls.
Biological Safety
Precautions used to protect individuals and the environment from exposure to harmful microorganisms.
Sterile Technique
A procedure designed to exclude all contaminants while performing an experiment.
