list the types of forgetting
retrieval failure, interference, motivated forgetting, decay theory
retrieval failure
inability to consciously recall info in long term store due to absence of cues to trigger memory
interference
info cant be retrieved due to it being disrupted by similar info
two types of interference
retroactive and proactive
proactive interference
previously stored info interferes with retrieval of new learning (e.g. i use the x button to jump of play station but with the new switch its y and in a different position so i get confused when i have to jump with it)
retroactive interference
new learning interferes with retrieval of previously stored info (e.g. i cant remember my old passwrod bc i keep thinking of my new one)
motivated forgetting
un/intentional suppression of memories/ thoughts from conscious awareness to minimise emotional distress
decay theory
suggests memories fade over time
