Equity
The quality of being fair and impartial.
Social Justice
Justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society.
Equality
The state of being entirely equal, but may not necessarily be fair.
Equity Deserving Groups
Groups that deserve fairness but have not yet received it.
Charity
The voluntary giving of help, typically in the form of money, to those in need.
Human Rights
Basic rights that should be the same globally; however, their realization varies across societies.
Critical Social Justice
Recognizes society's deep divisions and inequalities along social group lines that include race, gender, class, sexuality, and ability.
Social Identity
The part of an individual’s self-concept that is derived from their group memberships.
Intersectionality
The interconnected nature of social categorizations and how they create systems of discrimination and disadvantage.
Microaggressions
Subtle, often unintentional, discriminatory comments or actions against marginalized groups.
Allyship
The act of a member of a dominant or majority group advocating for marginalized populations.
Systemic Racism
Organizational culture, policies, or practices that exclude or disadvantage racialized groups.
Prejudice
A negative judgment about a person based on their group membership.
Discrimination
Harmful actions against someone based on their identity.
Oppression
The exercise of authority or power in a burdensome, cruel, or unjust manner.
Positionality
The concept that an individual’s perspective is shaped by social locations, such as race, class, and gender.
Understanding Social Location
Recognizing how personal identities impact privilege or disadvantage within society.
Inquiry
A process of questioning and researching important social issues related to justice and equity.
Visual Analysis
A method of critically analyzing visual elements to understand deeper meanings.
Unconscious Bias
Prejudices we unknowingly hold that are influenced by societal norms and conditioning.
Ecological Justice
Concerns the obligations of humans to the natural environment and the rights of nature.
Individual Justice
Fairness and respect in one-to-one relationships.
Social Justice
Fair obligations that individuals within subgroups have toward their community and society as a whole.
Distributive Justice
The just distribution of society's resources to its members.
